Chip Kelly: 'I like DeSean...But we're always going to do what's best for the organization'
ORLANDO -- Chip Kelly complimented DeSean Jackson on Wednesday, but would not commit to Jackson being on the team next season.
"I like DeSean. DeSean did a really nice job for us. But we’re always going to do what’s best for the organization," Kelly said when asked specifically if he wants Jackson on the Eagles.
Kelly spoke for one hour at the NFL's league meetings. He confirmed he spoke to Jackson this week, but he wanted to keep the conversation between them.
"I’ve talked to DeSean, and when you deal with situations like that, everything you do is player-to-player, player to coach," Kelly said. "We’ve had a good conversation and we’re always going to do what’s best for the football team. But I think he knows where we are, I know where he is, so I feel very comfortable about it. But my conversations with him aren’t things I think I need to have a conversation with anybody else about."
Kelly said Jackson's separation ability is a key asset. So when asked how the offense could be better without Jackson. Kelly said, "I don’t think our offense has ever been predicated on one player."
Kelly said he got along "well" with Jackson last season. He complimented Jackson's work ethic, saying Jackson did everything the team asked him to do. He did not have an issue with Jackson's social media activity. When Kelly was asked if he anticipates Jackson on the roster on April 21st, he did not answer definitively.
"I don't anticipate anybody being on the roster at that time, or I anticipate them all being," Kelly said. "I don't predict the future. When we get rolling on April 21st, we'll get going. ..When we show up on April 21st, I’m going to have my first team meeting and we’ll go from there. Who’s in that room is entirely up to them at that point in time.”
Kelly answered repeated Jackson questions. Although he spoke highly his receiver, he never said that Jackson would not be traded, and never said Jackson will be on the team. Yet when he was asked why this discussion is taking place, he turned it to the reporters.
“I don’t know why it’s a discussion. That’s a question for you guys," Kelly said. "I had a conversation with him. He knows where he stands with us. I know where I stand with him.
